How to use pointblank to understand, validate, and document your data

R/Medicine Webinar This workshop focused on the data quality and data documentation workflows that the pointblank package makes possible. The speaker Richard Iannone used functions that allowed us to: 1. quickly understand a new dataset 2. validate tabular data using rules that are based on our understanding of the data 3. fully document a table by describing its variables and other important details The pointblank package was created to scale from small validation problems (“Let’s make certain this table fits my expectations before moving on”) to very large (“Let’s validate these 35 database tables every day and ensure data quality is maintained”) and Ionnone delved into all sorts of data quality scenarios so the viewer will be comfortable using this package in their organization. Data documentation is seemingly and unfortunately less common in organizations (maybe even less than the practice of data validation). We’ll learn all about how this doesn’t have to be a tedious chore. The pointblank package allows you to create informative and beautiful data documentation that will help others understand what’s in all those tables that are so vital to an organization. In the past, writing a front end in React was a large time investment, and would be reserved only for a serious project. The Firelytics dataset is used in studies funded by NOAA and NASA to better understand wildfire behavior and health implications of wildfire smoke. The accompanying Firelytics Dashboard lets a user map the sub-daily timeseries of fire progression for any wildfire in the dataset. Firelytics is a novel tool for historical fire analysis in California which will help to better predict and plan for future wildfires. Sfarrow, the spatial extension of the Arrow package, facilitates the real-time querying of big spatial data that is necessary to share the Firelytics dataset in this accessible, visual format. I’m Julianne Gent, Analytics Developer for Emory Digital, and I’m here to discuss the natural language processing algorithm we built utilizing an automated SQL-to-R pipeline. This algorithm uses packages ‘odbc’ and ‘stringr’ to import SQL queries into R, recognize billing patterns, and extract billing time. Our algorithm accurately captured billing data for 93% of over 250,000 notes. The billing provided by our hospital’s medical software? Only 40%. Deploying Scikit-learn models for in-database scoring with Snowflake and Posit Team

Modern data science workflows often face a critical challenge: how to efficiently deploy machine learning models where the data lives. Traditional approaches require moving large datasets out of the database for scoring, creating bottlenecks, security concerns, and unnecessary data movement costs. In this demo, Nick Pelikan at Posit highlights how orbital bridges the gap between Python’s rich ML ecosystem and database-native execution by converting scikit-learn pipelines to optimized SQL.
