The R language is used extensively throughout the pharmaceutical industry. But its use within the tightly regulated clinical reporting workflows has remained limited. GSK Biostatistics has embarked upon a journey to embed R as a primary statistical analysis tool for clinical reporting. Enabling R within a global department of over 600 Statisticians, Programmers and Data Scientists is challenging! It requires planning, patience, and a strong foundation that enables consistency across the enterprise. We invite you to learn more about how we achieved this at GSK. You'll learn about our tidyverse-centric training program, a future-ready Working Area for R Programming (WARP) environment, and a leading-edge R for Clinical Reporting (R4CR) initiative. The goal: help embed R in every-day clinical reporting output. About Andy: Andy Nicholls has a long history with the R language and in Data Science, authoring the book ‘R in 24 Hours’. He is currently Head of Statistical Data Sciences within GSK’s Biostatistics department. One of his team’s main objectives is to embed the R language within Biostatistics; developing training materials, overseeing various adoption initiatives and provisioning a world-class environment for R . He is also the lead for the cross-industry R Validation Hub initiative that aims to support the use of R for regulatory work. About Michael: Michael Rimler is a clinical programmer in GSK Biostatistics and passionate about influencing the evolving role of open source technologies and data science capabilities on clinical data analytics. He is involved with numerous internal initiatives aimed at moving the organization in this direction, including leading the effort to fully integrate R into the clinical reporting process. Michael is a co-lead of the Open Source Technologies in Clinical Research PHUSE working group project, has chaired a PHUSE US Single Day Event on Data Visualization, and will serve as a co-chair for the 2021 PHUSE US Connect

Roche & Novartis: Effective Visualizations for Data Driven Decisions || Posit (2020)

Effective visual communication is a core task for all data scientists including statisticians, epidemiologists, machine learning experts, bioinformaticians, etc. By using the right graphical principles, we can better understand data, highlight core insights and influence decisions toward appropriate actions. Without it, we can fool ourselves and others and pave the way to wrong conclusions and actions. While numerous solutions exist to analyze data, these often require many manual steps to convert them into visually convincing and meaningful reports. How do we put this in practice in an accurate, transparent and reproducible way? In this webinar we will introduce an open collaborative effort, currently undertaken by Roche and Novartis, to develop solutions for effective visual communication with a focus on reporting medical and clinical data. The aim of the collaboration is to develop a user-friendly, fit for purpose, open source package to simplify the use of good graphical principles for effective visual communication of typical analyses of interventional and observational data encountered in clinical drug development. We will introduce the initial visR package design which easily integrates into a typical tidyverse workflow. The package provides guidance and meaningful default parameters covering all aspects from the design, implementation and review of statistical graphics. About Diego: Diego is a data scientist specializing in applied machine learning at Roche Personalized Healthcare since March 2019. He has developed models to perform various tasks and analyze diverse data sources. Currently, his main applications of interest are in onocology and clinico-genomics. About Mark: Mark is a methodologist supporting the clinical development and analytics department at Novartis. He has a focus on data visualization working on a number of internal and external initiatives to improve the reporting of clinical trials and observational studies. About Marc: Marc is a biostatistics group head at Novartis. Joe Rickert | R Consortium initiatives in medicine | Posit (2019)

R / Pharma and R / Medicine, two new R Consortium sponsored conferences that appeared in 2018, are both grass roots, community-level manifestations of fundamental trends driving the growth of R. R / Pharma organized as an R Consortium working group by R users at several prominent pharmaceutical companies demonstrated that R has reached sufficient critical mass in Pharma to be recognized as a technology important enough to explore inter-company cooperation, while the addition of Genetech/Roche to R Consortium shows the commitment of upper level management to migrate from SAS to R. - At the other, non-corporate end of the spectrum, the R / Medicine conference was well attended by practicing clinicians coming to R, and in some cases statistics and data analysis, for the first time in order to move forward with the practice of data driven medicine. - In this talk, I will present some highlights from these conferences, and other related R Consortium initiatives, describe some of the R-based projects that illustrate the kind of work being done, and indicate what to expect this year. About the Author Joseph Rickert Joseph is Posit's “Ambassador at Large” for all things R, editor of the R Views blog, and Posit's representative on the R Consortium’s board of directors. Joseph came to Posit via Revolution Analytics and Microsoft where he was a data scientist, blogger and community manager. Before joining Revolution Analytics Joseph worked as a statistician for a small healthcare economics consulting firm, and before that he held a variety of technical, marketing and sales positions while working for startups that spanned multiple industries including government contracting, local area networks, disk drives and test equipment. Joseph studied Classics and Mathematics as an undergraduate at Franklin & Marshall College and earned an M.A. in Humanities and an M.S. in Statistics from the California State University
