The Shiny VS Code extension provides tools for running and debugging Shiny applications in Python and R directly from VS Code. It adds “Run Shiny App” and “Debug Shiny App” commands to the Run button menu when editing app.py or app.R files.

The extension includes code snippets for creating new apps and modules, integration with Shinylive for creating shareable browser-based app links without deployment, and configurable working directory settings for complex project structures. It handles both single-file and multi-file apps, supports converting Shinylive links back to local files, and provides port configuration and debugging options. The extension uses the active Python interpreter from the Python extension and supports R developer mode by default.
