RStudio (now Posit) was founded in 2009 with the vision of creating high quality open-source software for data scientists. While our scope has expanded far beyond those early days, our core mission has never wavered. We invest heavily in open-source development, education, and the community with the goal of serving knowledge creators 100 years from now.

Our mission#

Posit’s mission is to create open-source software for data science, scientific research, and technical communication. We build tools that prioritize correctness, transparency, and reproducibility in their output.

Our open-source and professional software exist in a virtuous cycle. Wide adoption of our open-source tools in the community creates the foundation for our professional products . In turn, the revenue from our enterprise customers allows us to reinvest our engineering efforts back into the open-source ecosystem. This model ensures that our core projects remain free, stable, and active for the long term.

Public Benefit Corporation status#

Posit is a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). Our charter requires us to consider the impact of our decisions on the open-source community and the long-term health of the ecosystem we serve.

Open Source Pledge#

For over a decade, we have dedicated a majority of our engineering resources to open-source software. In 2024, we formally joined the Open Source Pledge as a commitment to continue funding the developers behind the core tools that the data science community relies on.
